Stocks Expensive, Yields Near 5%, and Fear Is Low: Protect Your Portfolio Now

Yesterday's market sent a clear message: stocks are pricey and bonds are competing hard for your money. The 10-year Treasury yield held near 5% all day. That level gives investors a real alternative to stocks for the first time in years. Stock valuations stayed elevated, higher than roughly 78 out of every 100 months since 2006. Sentiment shifted during the day. The VIX, Wall Street's fear gauge, started the morning at 17.4 and fell to 16.9 by the close. That drop signals growing calm, but calm can be deceiving. Lower fear means protective put options are cheaper to buy right now. Use that window before volatility returns. Three sectors told different stories yesterday. Biotech (XBI) gained 1.7% by the close, its strongest move of the day. It remains about 7% below its 52-week high. A second consecutive close above yesterday's level would confirm real momentum. Rising yields or a Fed surprise could reverse the gain quickly. Semiconductors (SMH, an exchange-traded fund tracking chip stocks) rose 1.3%. It sits about 16% below its 52-week high. A follow-through close on broad chip-sector volume would confirm buyers are serious. Homebuilders (ITB) fell 1.5% and are nearly 23% below their 52-week high. Rate pressure is the culprit. Watch for the 10-year yield to drop below 4.8% before considering this sector. Nuclear energy funds NLR and URA both sit roughly 42% below their 52-week highs. That is deep value if power demand accelerates, but a policy reversal on nuclear permitting ends the thesis fast. The core message from yesterday: protection is cheap, stocks are expensive, and yields are high. That combination rarely rewards the unhedged investor.
