A 5% Treasury Yield and Stretched Valuations Make Cheap Options Worth Buying
Keep the Protection On. Stocks look expensive and the bond market is sending a warning.
October 28, 2026 at 12:00 PM EDT
Justification
Stocks look expensive and the bond market is sending a warning. The 10-year Treasury yield sits at 5.0%, a level that competes directly with equity returns. Stock valuations are higher than roughly 77 out of every 100 months since 2006. The VIX, Wall Street's fear gauge, is 17.3 โ below its one-year average โ which makes protective put options relatively cheap right now. Use that low option cost to add downside protection, particularly in rate-sensitive areas like real estate and regional banks.
Since the Last Issue
- Fear & Greed Index moved from 33 to 35 since the prior issue โ still in Fear territory but slightly less anxious
- S&P 500 rose from 7722.6 to 7738.3 since the prior issue, now 1.0% below its 52-week high
