Market Pulse Daily Digest for October 21, 2026
Cheap Puts, Stretched Stocks, and a Market That Flipped Bullish by Close
Yesterday started defensive and ended with momentum. The morning brought caution: Healthcare surged 2.4% while Technology slipped, and the VIX, Wall Street's fear gauge, sat at 17.1. That early rotation into defensive sectors signaled investors were nervous. By midday and into the close, sentiment shifted. Technology led, semiconductors gained, and buyers stepped in across growth names. The VIX closed at 16.7, below its one-year average of 18.0. That makes protective put options cheaper than usual. Stocks are not cheap. The forward price-to-earnings ratio, or P/E, sits at 19.0. That valuation ranks higher than 78 out of every 100 months since 2006. The Fear and Greed Index reads 31, firmly in fear territory, even with the S&P 500 just 0.8% off its all-time high. That gap between price and sentiment is worth watching. For your portfolio: puts on broad index exposure remain the recommended hedge. The calm is real, but it is also the reason protection is affordable right now. Three sectors showed rotation potential yesterday. Semiconductors, tracked by SMH, gained 1.9% and NVDA rose 2.5%, though SMH still sits 17% below its 52-week high. Solar, tracked by TAN, also rose 1.9% but remains 44% below its peak. Airlines, tracked by JETS, gained between 0.8% and 1.7% across the day, sitting 22% below their high. The 10-year Treasury yield fell 0.2 percentage points over two weeks. That helped Utilities rise 1.3% and supports rate-sensitive sectors. If yields keep falling, defensive income plays gain appeal. If they reverse, those gains unwind quickly.
