Cheap Volatility and Pricey Stocks Make Puts the Smart Move Today
Hold the Hedges. Markets look calm on the surface, but that calm is exactly the problem.

Justification
Markets look calm on the surface, but that calm is exactly the problem. The VIX, Wall Street's fear gauge, sits at 16.7 โ well below its one-year average of 18.0, making protective options unusually cheap right now. Stock valuations are stretched: the forward price-to-earnings ratio, or P/E, is 19.0, and the trailing P/E ranks higher than 78 out of every 100 months since 2006. Buy protective puts on broad index exposure before that calm fades.
Since the Last Issue
- S&P 500 rose from 7752.9 to 7757.2 since the prior issue โ a gain of just 4 points, leaving the big picture essentially static
- VIX edged up from 16.7 to 16.7, holding near the same level, while the Fear and Greed Index moved from 31 to 31 โ sentiment unchanged
