Market Pulse Daily Digest for October 20, 2026
Cheap Puts, Pricey Stocks, and a Late Rally Worth Watching
Yesterday started in fear and ended with selective strength. The Fear and Greed Index opened the day at 22, deep in extreme fear territory. Yet the S&P 500 finished just 1.3% below its yearly high. Stocks remain expensive. The forward price-to-earnings ratio sits at 19. That valuation ranks higher than roughly 77 out of every 100 months since 2006. The VIX, Wall Street's fear gauge, closed at 17.3. That is below its one-year average of 18. Lower fear readings make protective put options cheaper to buy, so yesterday was a good day to add that protection. Sentiment shifted as the day progressed. Morning trading carried a cautious, fearful tone. By the close, buyers had moved into beaten-down sectors with conviction. Healthcare led all sectors, gaining 2.4%. XBI, a biotech fund, surged 3.6% and posted its strongest single-day gain in recent data. It still sits 9.8% below its 52-week high, leaving room to recover if earnings momentum continues. Housing also caught a bid. ITB, a homebuilder fund, jumped 2.8%. It trades 24% below its 52-week high. Falling 10-year Treasury yields over the past two weeks are easing mortgage pressure and drawing buyers back. Regional banks joined the move. KRE, a regional bank fund, rose 2.0% and sits about 10% below its 52-week high. A normal yield curve supports lending profits at smaller banks. What this means for your money: the rally in beaten-down sectors is real but unconfirmed. Valuations leave little cushion if anything disappoints. Keep hedges on your largest equity positions while watching these sectors for follow-through volume.
