Earnings Season Lifts Defensives, But Valuations Leave Little Room for Error
Hold the Hedges. Stocks look expensive by historical standards, and that alone warrants caution.

Justification
Stocks look expensive by historical standards, and that alone warrants caution. The price-to-earnings ratio is higher than in roughly 77 of every 100 months since 2006. The VIX, Wall Street's fear gauge, sits at 17.3 โ below its one-year average of 18.0 โ making protective put options relatively cheap to buy right now. With the S&P 500 just 1.3% off its yearly high and momentum neutral, add put protection on your largest equity positions before any catalyst closes that discount.
Since the Last Issue
- Fear & Greed Index moved from 26 to 27 since the prior issue โ still in Fear territory but sentiment is slowly stabilizing
- VIX fell from 17.9 to 17.3 since the prior issue, making protective options even cheaper than yesterday
