Market Pulse Daily Digest for October 16, 2026
Fear Gauge Rose, Tech Sold Off, But Energy Held Firm Yesterday
Yesterday's market shifted from cautious optimism to clear defensiveness by midday. The mood turned bearish as the day wore on. The VIX, Wall Street's fear gauge, started the morning at 15.9 and climbed to 17.1 by midday. That rise signals investors grew more worried as the day progressed. Tech led the selling and dragged broader sentiment lower. Valuations remain a real concern. Stock prices rank higher than 78 out of every 100 months since 2006. That leaves little room for error if earnings disappoint or yields stay high. The 10-year Treasury yield held at 5.2%, keeping pressure on growth stocks. Momentum also faded. The RSI, a momentum gauge, slipped to 47, below the neutral level of 50. That tells you buyers lost their edge yesterday. Falling momentum combined with rich valuations is a warning worth heeding. Energy was the clear bright spot. FCG gained 2.1% and sits only 6.4% below its 52-week high. XOP rose 1.3% and is just 1.7% below its own 52-week high. Both names showed relative strength while the rest of the market weakened. Biotech took a hard hit. XBI dropped 3.0%, its sharpest single-day decline on the recent watchlist. It now sits 14.5% below its 52-week high. Some value-focused buyers may see an entry point, but more selling could follow before any floor forms. What this means for your money: The VIX rise made protective options slightly more expensive by day's end, but premiums are still reasonable. Consider downside protection on tech holdings. Energy names look like the steadiest ground right now.
