Stocks Near Their High, But Valuations and Yields Say Stay Guarded
Stay Hedged. Stocks are priced richly while fear quietly lingers beneath the surface.

Justification
Stocks are priced richly while fear quietly lingers beneath the surface. The VIX, Wall Street's fear gauge, sits at 15.9 โ well below its one-year average of 18.0, making protective options unusually cheap right now. Stock valuations rank higher than roughly 78 out of every 100 months going back to 2006. With the 10-year Treasury yield still at 5.2%, buy protective puts on the S&P 500 while that low volatility keeps premiums affordable.
Since the Last Issue
- VIX fell from 16.5 to 16.0 since the prior issue, keeping option premiums cheap and making protective puts more attractive
- S&P 500 edged up from 7,744 to 7,744 โ essentially flat, but Healthcare led at +1.9% while Energy lagged at -1.6%
