Market Pulse Daily Digest for October 13, 2026
Energy Rallied, Biotech Stumbled, and Cheap Protection Won't Last
Yesterday began with cautious optimism. Banks beat earnings expectations, lifting Financials by 0.6%. Chip stocks slid, and large-cap tech faced early pressure. By midday, the mood stayed calm but uneasy. The Fear and Greed Index dropped to 43, drifting toward fear even as prices held near highs. Markets looked steady on the surface, but sentiment was quietly souring underneath. By the close, energy had taken the lead. The energy sector gained 1.4% for the day. Healthcare reversed its morning gain and fell 1.4%, a notable intraday shift from early defensive strength to afternoon weakness. The VIX, Wall Street's fear gauge, closed at 15.3. That is well below its one-year average of 18.1. Low fear readings make protective put options unusually cheap right now. That window may not stay open long. Valuations remain stretched. Stocks are priced higher than roughly 79 out of every 100 months since 2006. The 10-year Treasury yield sits at 5.2%, adding pressure to growth assets. Three watchlist names moved sharply. XOP, an oil and gas exploration fund, surged 2.9%, its strongest single day recently, and sits just 0.5% below its 52-week high. Fresh Houthi strikes on Saudi aviation infrastructure drove the move. A ceasefire or Saudi output increase would quickly reverse it. FCG, a natural gas fund, rose 2.0% and sits 6.5% below its 52-week high. Winter demand and Russian supply friction support it. TAN, a solar fund, gained 2.1% but remains 41.3% below its 52-week high. Treasury yields above 5.3% would hurt it. The core message yesterday was consistent: valuations are high, fear is low, and protection is still cheap. That combination rarely lasts.
