Banks Beat, Chips Bleed: Valuations Still Demand Caution
Keep Trimming. Markets look calm on the surface, but the calm is misleading.
October 13, 2026 at 9:01 AM EDT
Justification
Markets look calm on the surface, but the calm is misleading. Stock valuations are higher than roughly 79 out of every 100 months since 2006, and the 10-year Treasury yield sits at 5.2%. The VIX, Wall Street's fear gauge, is 15.3 โ well below its one-year average of 18.1, which makes protective put options relatively cheap right now. Buy those puts on large-cap tech exposure, where chip stocks are already sliding today.
Since the Last Issue
- Big picture is nearly static: Fear & Greed held at 46, VIX edged from 15.2 to 15.3, and the S&P 500 is flat since the prior issue.
- Sector rotation shifted notably โ Energy led at +1.4% and Consumer Staples gained +1.2%, while Technology lagged at -1.2%.
