Fear Stays Hot as Stocks Bounce: Sell Calls, Stay Selective

Yesterday's market opened with extreme fear and closed with cautious optimism, but conviction never fully arrived. The VIX, Wall Street's fear gauge, started the day at 21.1 and eased to 20.8 by the close. Both readings sit above the one-year average of 18.1, keeping options expensive. That favors selling covered calls on positions you already own, not buying new protection. The S&P 500 gained ground yesterday, but valuations remain stretched. The forward price-to-earnings ratio, or P/E, stands at 18.3. The trailing P/E ranks higher than 74 out of 100 months since 2006. Expensive markets need strong catalysts to keep climbing. The Fear and Greed Index dropped to 19, signaling extreme fear. That level historically marks oversold conditions, but oversold can stay oversold without a clear trigger to reverse it. Three sectors showed relative strength yesterday and are worth watching. Solar stocks, measured by TAN, gained roughly 2 to 3% but remain 43% below their 52-week high. A second consecutive up day on rising volume would confirm buyers are returning. Falling energy prices or a policy reversal on clean-energy subsidies would kill the move. Uranium stocks, measured by URA, edged up 0.4% but sit 47% below their 52-week high. Watch for a move above $35 alongside positive nuclear-policy headlines. Biotech, measured by XBI, rose about 2% and sits roughly 9% below its 52-week high. It was the strongest performer in the watchlist relative to its recent setup. A close above the 50-day moving average, a short-term trend line, would confirm buyers are stepping in. A broad fear-driven selloff would quickly erase the gain. Patience still beats aggression here. Your money is better protected by hedging existing wins than chasing yesterday's bounce.
