Cheap Options, Pricey Stocks — Fear Lingers Even as the Market Rallies
Keep the Protection On. Stocks look expensive by historical standards, and that alone warrants caution.

Justification
Stocks look expensive by historical standards, and that alone warrants caution. The price-to-earnings ratio is higher than in 76 of every 100 months since 2006. The VIX, Wall Street's fear gauge, sits at 17.5 — below its one-year average of 18.0, which makes protective options relatively cheap right now. The Fear and Greed Index reads 33, firmly in fear territory, even as the S&P 500 climbed today. Buy protective puts on broad index exposure before sentiment shifts further.
Since the Last Issue
- Fear and Greed Index moved from 30 to 33 since the prior issue — still fear territory but improving
- VIX fell from 17.78 to 17.5 since the prior issue, keeping options cheap
