Yields at 5.2%, Valuations Stretched: Cheap Puts Are Your Best Friend This Week
Day 3 at a cautious posture

Justification

Markets are calm on the surface, but calm is not the same as safe. Stock valuations sit higher than roughly 79 out of every 100 months since 2006, and the 10-year Treasury yield stands at 5.2%. The VIX, Wall Street's fear gauge, is 15.5 — well below its one-year average of 18.1, which makes protective put options cheap right now. Buy puts on broad index exposure as a low-cost hedge before this week's calendar has a chance to move yields or sentiment.

Since the Last Issue

  • VIX rose from 14.8 to 15.5 since the prior issue, reversing last week's drift lower
  • S&P 500 held flat at 7,811 since the prior issue, with Real Estate leading at +1.9% and Communication Services lagging at -1.5%
