Valuations Stay Stretched as Energy Leads and Bank Earnings Split the Market
Day 5 at a cautious posture

Justification

Markets are calm on the surface, but that calm is masking real valuation risk. Stock prices relative to earnings are higher than in roughly 79 out of every 100 months since 2006. The VIX, Wall Street's fear gauge, sits at 15.8 โ€” well below its one-year average of 18.1 โ€” making protective put options relatively cheap right now. With the 10-year Treasury yield at 5.2%, borrowing costs remain a headwind for stretched valuations. Buy protective puts on broad index exposure before volatility returns.

Since the Last Issue

  • VIX rose from 15.3 to 15.8 since the prior issue, the first meaningful uptick in several days
  • S&P 500 slipped -1.8 points to 7,805 while the NASDAQ 100 fell -228 points to 30,341
