Valuations Near a 20-Year Ceiling While Rates Keep Climbing the Stairs
September 22, 2026 at 6:02 PM EDT
Justification
The market is priced for perfection at a moment when the cost of money keeps climbing. The trailing P/E (price-to-earnings ratio) sits at the 78th percentile of its own 20-year history, and the 10-year Treasury yield has risen 16 basis points over the last 10 sessions, making bonds a genuine competitor to equities. VIX (the market's fear gauge) at 14.21 and falling means protective put options are cheap โ now is the time to buy them, not sell them. Watch Financials, which shed nearly 2% today on JPM, V, and MA weakness; that sector's stumble is a leading warning when rates are the story.
Since the Last Issue
- Fear & Greed edged up from 34 to 35 since the prior issue โ still in Fear territory, but the marginal improvement masks a Financials sector that dropped -1.97% today, the session's sharpest sector loss.
- VIX fell from 14.39 to 14.21 since the prior issue, extending its slide and keeping option premium cheap for hedgers.
- S&P 500 ticked up from 7,760.95 to 7,764.64 since the prior issue โ essentially flat, with sector rotation doing the real work beneath the surface.
- RSI (momentum gauge) eased from 58.91 to 58.61 since the prior issue, confirming momentum is fading at the margin without breaking down.
