Rates Still Rule the Room, but the Panic Has Left the Building
October 7, 2026 at 6:02 PM EDT
Justification
Markets are complacent enough to warrant lightening up, but the stress picture has eased just enough to pull back from the aggressive trim posture of recent sessions. The 10-year Treasury yield (the rate the U.S. government pays to borrow for a decade) has surged +17 basis points over the last 10 sessions to 5.27%, compressing equity valuations from above. The trailing P/E (price relative to last year's earnings) sits at the 78.8th percentile of its own 20-year history โ expensive by almost any measure. With VIX (the market's fear gauge) at 15.08 and options cheap, buying protective puts on crowded positions is the most cost-effective hedge available right now.
Since the Last Issue
- Stress score improved from -0.447 to -0.513 since the prior issue, shifting the decision from Trim Aggressively to Trim Moderately โ the most decision-relevant change today.
- 10-year Treasury yield eased from 5.31% to 5.27% since the prior issue, though the 10-session cumulative move remains a punishing +17bp.
- Fear & Greed Index moved from 43 to 45 since the prior issue, staying in neutral territory but edging slightly less fearful.
- RSI (momentum gauge) ticked up from 59.1 to 60.3 since the prior issue, remaining neutral but drifting closer to the 70 overbought threshold.
