Rates Ratchet Higher While Valuations Sit in the Nosebleeds โ Cheap Puts Are Your Ticket
September 28, 2026 at 12:02 PM EDT
Justification
Markets look calm on the surface, but the week ahead carries enough rate and earnings risk to justify buying protection now. The VIX (a gauge of expected volatility) sits at 16.32 โ below 20, which keeps option premiums cheap and makes buying protective puts the preferred hedge. The 10-year Treasury yield has climbed 21 basis points over the past 10 sessions, and the trailing P/E (price-to-earnings ratio) ranks at the 77th percentile of its own 20-year history โ a stretched valuation that leaves little cushion if yields keep rising. Watch Communication Services, which led today's sector selloff at -1.64%; a break below SPY's 52-week low of $629 would signal the next leg down.
Since the Last Issue
- Fear & Greed slipped from 37 to 35 since the prior issue, deepening into Fear territory as selling broadened across nine of eleven sectors.
- VIX rose from 16.03 to 16.32 since the prior issue โ still below 20 but trending higher, nudging option-buying urgency upward.
- S&P 500 fell from 7,743.41 to 7,683.87 since the prior issue (-0.77%), with Communication Services leading the decline at -1.64% while Energy and Healthcare were the only sectors in the green.
- RSI (momentum gauge) dropped from 56.56 to 50.29 since the prior issue, retreating to the midpoint and erasing the mild bullish lean of recent sessions.
