Rates Did the Heavy Lifting โ Now Let Your Covered Calls Do the Rest
September 29, 2026 at 10:33 AM EDT
Justification
The market is calm on the surface but quietly expensive, and a sharp rate move is now forcing a more defensive posture. The 10-year Treasury yield has surged 27 basis points (hundredths of a percent) over the past 10 sessions to 5.17%, compressing the case for equities priced at a forward P/E (price-to-earnings ratio) of 19.15 โ sitting in the neutral-to-caution zone. The VIX (a gauge of expected market volatility) sits at 15.9, meaning options are cheap, which favors buying protection over selling it; however, the rate shock already tipped the posture one tier more defensive. Watch the 5.20% level on the 10-year: a break higher would pressure homebuilders and rate-sensitive sectors further.
