Rates Creep, Complacency Peaks: The Market's Charging a Premium It May Not Be Able to Keep
September 22, 2026 at 9:03 AM EDT
Justification
Markets are priced for perfection at a moment when the cost of capital is quietly rising. The trailing P/E (price relative to reported earnings) sits at the 78th percentile of its own 20-year history — expensive by almost any measure. The 10-year Treasury yield has climbed 18 basis points over the past 10 sessions, tightening the discount rate that justifies those valuations. VIX (the market's fear gauge) at 14.67 is well below its trailing-year average, making protective puts cheap — deploy them on concentrated positions rather than selling into strength indiscriminately. Watch the 5.00% level on the 10-year; a sustained break above it would pressure the forward P/E multiple further.
Since the Last Issue
- VIX eased from 14.87 to 14.67 since the prior issue, deepening complacency even as the 10-year yield risk persists
- 10-year Treasury yield held near 5.01% — flat since the prior issue but up +18bp over the past 10 sessions, the primary valuation headwind
- Communication Services led sector performance at +3.56% while Energy lagged at -2.88%, the sharpest intraday sector spread in recent sessions
- META surged +11.34% and QQQ gained +2.77%, pulling large-cap growth higher and masking broader defensive rotation
