Healthcare Leads, Tech and Alphabet Sink: Rotation Sharpens as Stocks Stay Pricey
Yesterday's market told a clear story: money moved out of growth and into defense. The big shift. Technology fell 1.2% while Healthcare gained 2.4% by the close. That rotation started at the open and accelerated through the day. Alphabet dropped 12%, dragging Communication Services lower alongside Tech. Intraday sentiment change. The morning leaned cautiously bullish, with Tech briefly leading. By midday, Alphabet's collapse shifted sentiment defensive. The afternoon close confirmed the bearish tilt in growth stocks, with defensive sectors firmly in charge. Valuations remain stretched. Stock prices are more expensive than in roughly 77 to 78 of every 100 months since 2006. That leaves little cushion if earnings disappoint. Fear is cheap, which is useful. The VIX, Wall Street's fear gauge, closed at 17.2, below its one-year average of 18. Protective put options cost less than usual right now. That makes hedging your portfolio relatively affordable. Yields are a headwind. The 10-year Treasury yield (long-term borrowing costs) rose to 5.05% yesterday. That pressures homebuilders and utilities. Homebuilders still jumped 3.5%, the strongest single move in the watchlist, but they remain 20% below their 52-week high. A yield drop below 4.9% would be the real catalyst there. Consumer names showed life. Retail gained 2.6% and sits only 4.8% below its 52-week high. Leisure and entertainment gained 2.1% and is just 3.5% from its high. Mastercard and Visa both rose over 2%, supporting the consumer spending picture. What to watch. Hold hedges. Defensive sectors led all day. Until yields fall and valuations ease, growth stocks face real pressure.
