Fear gauge explodes to 28, tech craters 8%: how to position after yesterday's rout

Yesterday began with markets looking calm and valuations stretched. The VIX, Wall Street's fear gauge, opened at a low 16.8, making protective options cheap ahead of Friday's jobs report. That calm did not last. By midday, sentiment had shifted sharply. The VIX surged to 24.7 as tech sold off hard and defensive sectors held their ground. Energy and Consumer Staples showed clear relative strength. Rotating toward those areas while trimming tech exposure was the concrete midday move. By the close, fear had taken over completely. The VIX hit 28.2 against its one-year average of 18.1. Every major sector fell. The S&P 500 finished 5.9% below its yearly high. RSI, a momentum gauge, dropped to 33.5, just above the level that historically signals oversold conditions. The intraday arc was stark: cautious optimism at the open, defensive rotation by midday, broad panic by the close. Three ideas worth watching as the dust settles. First, XLU, the utilities fund, fell only 0.7% and sits just 9.4% from its 52-week high. Defensive money rotated in visibly. A close above $44 with the S&P 500 stabilizing would confirm that rotation is real. Second, FCG, a natural gas fund, dropped 2.6% and now sits 15.5% below its 52-week high. The 10-year Treasury yield eased yesterday, which helps rate-sensitive energy names. A bounce above $29 alongside stable crude prices would signal buyers returning. Third, URA, a uranium fund, cratered 5.3% and sits 50% below its 52-week high. That is a deep washout. Watch for two consecutive closes above $30 on rising volume before adding exposure. Rising long-term Treasury yields remain the single biggest threat to all three ideas.
