Fear Spikes, Then Buyers Return: Solar and Housing Lead a Cautious Bounce
Yesterday started with fear firmly in control. The VIX, Wall Street's fear gauge, climbed to 21.2, well above its one-year average of 18. That level makes options expensive, which favors selling calls for income rather than buying protection. Morning momentum was weak. The RSI, a momentum gauge, opened at 40.2, close to oversold but not a clear buy signal. Stock valuations remained stretched, higher than roughly 74 out of every 100 months since 2006. Sentiment shifted by midday. Buyers returned, though conviction was thin. The RSI recovered to 44.1, still below neutral. The 10-year Treasury yield eased to 4.98%, giving some relief to rate-sensitive stocks. By the close, fear had intensified again. The RSI fell back to 38.0, and the S&P 500 sat 3.5% below its one-year high. Despite the choppy backdrop, several sectors posted strong gains. Solar led the watchlist. TAN surged 4.7% but remains 44.4% below its 52-week high. Rates staying above 4.9% remain the key threat to solar project economics. Homebuilders followed. ITB jumped 4.6% and sits 15.9% below its 52-week high. A 10-year yield drop below 4.8% would confirm the rate tailwind. Sticky inflation this week could reverse that quickly. Regional banks also moved. KRE gained 2.4% and trades only 5.9% below its 52-week high. A steepening yield curve supports lending margins, but any rate reversal kills the thesis fast. Airlines joined the rally. JETS gained 5.5% and sits 16.6% below its 52-week high, supported by consumer spending data. An oil price spike from geopolitical escalation remains the main risk. The bottom line: yesterday's bounce was real but uneven. Keep hedges in place until this week's inflation and Fed commentary clarify the next move.
