Five Percent Yield Knocking: Cheap Vol, Pricey Stocks, and a Fed That Holds the Key
September 16, 2026 at 12:03 PM EDT
Justification
Rates are tightening their grip on valuations just as the Fed prepares to speak, and the market is not priced for bad news. The 10-year Treasury yield has climbed 25 basis points over the past ten sessions to 4.97%, compressing the appeal of equities whose trailing P/E (price-to-earnings ratio) sits at the 74th percentile of its own 20-year history. VIX (the market's implied volatility gauge) sits at 16.69 and falling, which makes protective put options unusually cheap — the ideal moment to buy insurance before it gets expensive. Watch the 4.97% yield level on the 10-year; a break above 5.00% would be the clearest signal to add downside protection in rate-sensitive sectors.
Since the Last Issue
- S&P 500 rose from 7,585.73 to 7,618.83 since the prior issue (+0.44%), but the index remains 2.24% below its trailing 252-session high — the rally has not changed the defensive posture.
- VIX fell from 16.84 to 16.69 since the prior issue, keeping option premium cheap and reinforcing the case for buying protective puts rather than selling calls.
- RSI (momentum gauge) improved from 44.09 to 47.34 since the prior issue, moving closer to neutral but still below 50 — no momentum confirmation yet.
- Energy led sector declines at -2.17% today, with XOM dropping -2.91%, while Technology led gains at +1.02% — rotation away from commodity-linked names and toward growth continued.
