Earnings Season Heats Up Into a Market That Is Calm, Pricey, and Exposed
October 12, 2026 at 6:02 PM EDT
Justification
Markets look calm on the surface, but the calm itself is the warning. The VIX, Wall Street's fear gauge, sits at 15.2 โ well below its one-year average of 18.1 โ meaning investors are paying little for protection right now. Stock valuations are higher than in roughly 79 of every 100 months since 2006, and the 10-year Treasury yield stands at 5.2%, competing directly with equity returns. With earnings season in full swing, buy protective puts while options are still cheap.
Since the Last Issue
- S&P 500 slipped from 7,814.7 to 7,807.2 since the prior issue, staying 0.1% below its 52-week high
- VIX edged up from 15.1 to 15.2 since the prior issue โ still low, but no longer drifting lower
