Cheap Fear Gauge, Stretched Valuations: Time to Buy Protection
Add Portfolio Protection. Markets look calm on the surface, but the calm is hiding real risk.
October 19, 2026 at 12:00 PM EDT
Justification
Markets look calm on the surface, but the calm is hiding real risk. Stock valuations sit higher than roughly 75% of all months since 2006, leaving little room for disappointment. The VIX, Wall Street's fear gauge, is 17.7 โ below 20, which makes protective put options relatively cheap to buy right now. RSI, a momentum gauge, has slipped to 49.6, signaling that the recent bounce has no conviction behind it. Use cheap options to buy downside protection on your largest equity positions before this week's calendar can shift the mood.
