Calm Surface, Rising Tide: 5.11% Yields Are Doing the Work Bears Can't
September 25, 2026 at 12:02 PM EDT
Justification
Markets are ending the week in a deceptive calm โ indices up, volatility low, yet the rate backdrop is quietly tightening the screws. The 10-year Treasury yield has surged 23 basis points over the past 10 sessions to 5.11%, compressing the equity risk premium against a forward P/E (price relative to expected earnings) of 19.3x โ squarely in caution territory. VIX (the market's fear gauge) sits at 15.44, well below its trailing-year average, which makes protective put options unusually cheap right now. Use that low premium to buy downside protection on large-cap tech, where META dropped 3.5% today and rate sensitivity is highest.
Since the Last Issue
- S&P 500 advanced from 7,704.13 to 7,729.07 since the prior issue, a +25-point gain that narrows the gap from the 52-week high to just -0.94%

- RSI (momentum gauge) improved from 53.45 to 55.5 since the prior issue, moving further into neutral-bullish territory
- Technology led sector rotation at +0.81% while Energy lagged at -1.18%, with META's -3.49% single-name drop the sharpest move of the session
