28 Basis Points in 10 Days โ The Bond Market Is Setting the Agenda
September 30, 2026 at 6:01 PM EDT
Justification
Rates are doing the heavy lifting here, and not in a friendly way for equity bulls. The 10-year Treasury yield (the benchmark cost of money across the economy) has surged 28 basis points in just 10 sessions to 5.26%, enough to knock the market's posture down one tier from its otherwise calm baseline. The trailing P/E (price relative to reported earnings) sits at its 75th historical percentile โ expensive territory โ while the RSI (a momentum gauge) at 47.85 signals fading upside energy. With VIX (the market's implied fear gauge) still below 20 at 16.34, option premium is relatively cheap, which actually favors buyers of options over sellers โ but the rate shock and stretched valuation override that, making covered-call income the disciplined play. Watch the 5.30% level on the 10-year: a break above it would pressure rate-sensitive sectors further.
